How to Add an FAQ Section to Your Website (And Why Your Competitors Already Have One)

Search for any service in your city and look at the Google results. Underneath the map pack, you'll often see expandable questions and answers — a feature Google calls "People Also Ask." Those questions are the exact searches real people type into Google.

Now look at the websites of the businesses ranking at the top of those results. Most of them have FAQ sections on their service pages or a dedicated FAQ page. That's not a coincidence. FAQ content targets the question-based searches that make up a growing share of local search queries — and when marked up with FAQ schema, it can appear as expandable answers directly in Google search results, taking up more screen space and attracting more clicks.

Your competitors have figured this out. Here's how to do the same.

Why FAQ Content Works for Local SEO

Every question a customer asks before hiring you is a question other people are typing into Google. "How much does drain cleaning cost?" "How long does a roof replacement take?" "Do I need a permit for an electrical panel upgrade?" "Does insurance cover water damage restoration?"

These long-tail queries represent searchers in the research and decision-making phase — people who are close to hiring someone but need a few answers first. A website that provides those answers captures that traffic. One that doesn't sends those searchers to a competitor who does.

FAQ content also strengthens the topical depth of your service pages. A page about drain cleaning that includes questions like "How often should drains be cleaned?" and "What causes recurring drain clogs?" signals to Google that the page covers the topic comprehensively — not just superficially.

Where to Put FAQ Content

You have two options, and the best approach is usually both.

FAQ Sections on Service Pages

Add three to five relevant questions and answers at the bottom of each service page. A drain cleaning page might include: "How much does drain cleaning cost?" "What causes drains to clog?" "How often should I have my drains cleaned?" "Can I clear a clogged drain myself?" "How long does professional drain cleaning take?"

This approach keeps the FAQ content contextually relevant to the service, which strengthens that page's relevance for related searches. Each service page becomes more comprehensive without requiring a separate FAQ page.

A Dedicated FAQ Page

A standalone FAQ page that covers the most common questions across all your services is a complement to service-page FAQs, not a replacement. The dedicated page targets broader searches like "plumber FAQ" or "[service] questions" and serves as a reference customers can browse.

Organize it by topic — questions about pricing, questions about specific services, questions about your process, questions about scheduling and availability. Keep the structure clean and easy to scan.

How to Find the Right Questions

Google's "People Also Ask." Search your primary keywords and note every question that appears in the "People Also Ask" box. These are real questions from real searchers — exactly the content Google wants to serve answers for.

Google Autocomplete. Start typing a question in Google's search bar and note the suggestions that appear. "How much does" + "roof replacement" will generate multiple question variations that people actually search.

Your own experience. You know what customers ask. The questions you answer on the phone, on job sites, and in emails are the same questions people are searching for online. Write them down over the course of a week and you'll have more FAQ content ideas than you need.

Google Search Console. If you've set up Search Console, look at the queries that trigger impressions for your site. Many of them will be question-format searches that you could answer more directly with FAQ content.

How to Write Effective FAQ Answers

Keep answers concise, direct, and genuinely helpful. The goal isn't to write a paragraph — it's to answer the question clearly in two to four sentences.

Question: "How much does drain cleaning cost?"

Good answer: "Professional drain cleaning typically costs between $150 and $350, depending on the severity of the clog and the method used. Simple clogs cleared with a snake are on the lower end, while hydro jetting for stubborn blockages costs more. We provide upfront pricing before starting any work."

Bad answer: "Pricing varies. Call us for a free estimate." (This doesn't answer the question and provides no value.)

Include specific details where possible — price ranges, timeframes, what's included. The more useful the answer, the more likely Google is to feature it and the more likely a customer is to trust you enough to call.

Adding FAQ Schema Markup

This is the technical step that turns your FAQ content from regular text into enhanced search results. FAQ schema is a small piece of code that tells Google "these are questions and answers" in a format it can read directly.

When Google recognizes FAQ schema on your page, it can display your questions and answers as expandable dropdowns directly in search results. This feature takes up significantly more space on the results page than a standard listing — which means more visibility and more clicks for you.

If you use WordPress: Plugins like Rank Math, Yoast, and Schema Pro include FAQ schema generators. You add your questions and answers through the plugin interface, and it generates the structured data automatically.

If you don't use WordPress: Ask your web developer to add FAQ schema (in JSON-LD format) to any page with FAQ content. It's a straightforward implementation — typically less than an hour of work per page.

Validate afterward: Use Google's Rich Results Test (search for it — it's free) to paste your page URL and confirm the FAQ schema is properly recognized.

The Competitive Advantage Is Still Available

FAQ sections and FAQ schema are increasingly common among top-ranked websites, but the majority of local business websites still don't have them. In most markets, adding well-researched FAQ content with proper schema markup gives you an edge that 70-80% of your competitors haven't claimed yet.

It's also one of the lowest-effort, highest-return content additions you can make. Three to five questions per service page, written in 20 minutes, with schema added through a plugin. The time investment is minimal. The ranking and visibility benefits compound across every page you add it to.

If your competitors' search results show expandable FAQ answers and yours don't, this is why — and it's fixable today.
